The European eel begins its life in the Sargasso Sea to the south-west of Bermuda. The larvae (known as leptocephali) are carried by the Gulf Stream towards the coasts of Europe. This amazing 5,000 mile journey can take up to three years. As they approach the coast they metamorphose into transparent ‘glass eels’. They then enter estuaries and start their upstream migration into freshwater. The glass eels then metamorphose into ‘elvers’ which are miniature versions of adult eels (approximately 70
