Today, we remember Dr. Fred Whipple who was born on this day in 1906. Hailing from Red Oak, Iowa, Whipple was an innovator consistently working ahead of his time. He developed the “dirty snowball” model of comets, concluding that there was ice in a comet's nucleus which vaporized into gas and created the distinctive tail of comets.
